The term 'public house' is fairly modern. it did not make its appearance until the late 17th century but within two or three generations was in general circulation. The convenient and affectionate abbreviation 'pub' had certainly arrived by 1812, and by the late 19th century was part of everyday speech.

On the photo - Peter Haydon, author of 'The English Pub: A History' and definetely lover of a good pint.
